My first trip to Rishikesh was disappointing.
I expected peace, beautiful views of the Ganga, and a relaxing break from city life. Instead, I found crowded ghats, traffic jams, and tourists everywhere. Within two days, I was tired and ready to go home.
A few months later, I visited again. This time, everything felt different. The city was calmer, the river felt more peaceful, and I finally understood why people love Rishikesh.
The biggest difference? I visited at the right time.
So, When Is the Best Time to Visit Rishikesh?
October to February
This is the most popular season. The weather is pleasant, the skies are clear, and the views are beautiful.
However, it’s also the busiest time of the year. Hotels are more expensive, attractions are crowded, and popular areas can feel overwhelming.
If you don’t mind crowds, this season is a good choice.
March to June
This is my personal favourite time to visit.
Many people avoid summer, but Rishikesh is not as uncomfortable as many other North Indian cities. Mornings and evenings are lovely, and there are far fewer tourists.
You get more space, less noise, and a much more relaxed experience.
Just avoid going out between noon and 4 PM when the sun is strongest.
July to September
Monsoon brings greenery and beautiful views, but it can also create travel problems. Heavy rain, road issues, and rafting restrictions are common during this season.
For most travellers, it’s not the ideal time to visit.
Where I Stayed
During my second trip, I stayed at The Neeraj Ganga Ranimahal on the quieter Visthapit side of Rishikesh.
Unlike the busy Tapovan and Laxman Jhula areas, this part of the city felt peaceful and less crowded.
The best part was the Ganga-facing room. Sitting by the window and watching the river flow was one of the most relaxing experiences of the trip.
The nearby ghat was calm, the evening Ganga Aarti felt personal, and the simple vegetarian food was fresh and satisfying.
My Top Tips
- Visit between March and May if you prefer fewer crowds.
- Choose a quieter area instead of the busiest tourist spots.
- Spend time at the ghats instead of rushing through attractions.
- Plan activities for early morning or evening.
- Don’t miss the Ganga Aarti at sunset.
Final Thoughts
Rishikesh can either feel exhausting or incredibly peaceful—it all depends on when you visit and where you stay.
If you’re looking for the calmer side of the city, visit during March to May, stay near the river, slow down, and enjoy the simple moments.
That’s when Rishikesh feels truly special.
